Sports Booster Awards Dinner recognizes VHS athletes and coaches

With Special Guest Speaker Yogi Berra
Join the Verona Sports Boosters on Tuesday, June 3, at 6:30 pm at The Richfield Regency to recognize the teamwork and individual accomplishments of the VHS athletes and coaches. Hall of Fame Catcher Yogi Berra will be the guest speaker at this year’s Awards Dinner. Senior athletes will receive Sports Boosters Scholarships and special awards and a video presentation featuring our fall, winter and spring teams will highlight the camaraderie, hard work, and successes of all students. Tickets are $35.00 for athletes and coaches; all others are $50 per person. All VHS athletes and parents are encouraged to attend. Verona Rescue Squad Blood Drive.
The drive will be on May 23, 2008 from 4pm to 8pm at the Verona Rescue Squad 12 Church Street. They will be giving away free $15 dollar gas cards to anyone who donates. Appointments are preferred and can be made through http://www.bloodnj.org. Walk-ins are also welcome. We will also be providing juice and assorted refreshments.

Welcome Back Spring Migrating Birds in the Hilltop Reservation
Come for a bird walk in the Hilltop Reservation on Saturday, May 31st at 8:30 a.m.. All are welcome. Meet up with Phoebe Epstein of the WildBird Center in the Courter Lane Parking Lot off Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell. Welcome back nesting Warblers and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks who have recently migrated north. Enjoy a walk in the Hilltop Reservation and don't forget to download a birding checklist at http://www.hilltopconservancy.org/BirdingChecklist-032206d.pdf.  If heavy rain is falling, this event will be cancelled.

Rescue Squad Celebrates EMS Week
On Tuesday, May 20, a free American Heart Association Friends and Family CPR course will be given at the rescue squad's headquarters at 12 Church Street from 6:00 to 8:30 pm. Space is limited so please call early for a reservation at 973-857-4760 or register on our website at www.veronarescuesquad.org

On Wednesday, May 21, the main event for EMS Week will be an open house at the Verona Rescue Squad's headquarters building at 12 Church Street from 6:00 to 9:00 in the evening. The entire public is invited to come and learn about the services your rescue squad provides. There will be handouts, food and drinks, blood pressure screenings, first aid demonstrations, ambulance walkthroughs and a rescue truck light show. All activities are free of charge and children are welcome. This is an excellent opportunity to meet the dedicated members of the squad.

Verona Park Conservancy Meeting on May 15
The Verona Park Conservancy is a non-profit organization of volunteers working with Essex County to maintain and improve the condition and facilities of Verona Park. All are invited to attend VPC meetings on the third Thursday each month.

Due to the Fishing Derby, we will meet at 8:30pm in the Verona Park Boathouse, Bloomfield and Lakeside Aves., Verona. Free

Hello Hilltoppers
There will be no Hilltop Conservancy meetings during the late Spring  and Summer. The regular May, June, July and August meetings will not be held. We will meet again on the 24th of September, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. at the Verona Park Boat House. Check our website for scheduled activities in late May and June. Also stay tuned for possible requests for help with trails.

Verona Park Show Celebrates Its 22nd Year
Jewelers, potters, glass artists and fiber artists are just some of the 130 professional fine artists, photographers and crafters coming from as far away as Maine and Florida to display and sell their hand crafted work at the 22nd annual FineArt and Crafts at Verona Park Show on May 17-18 from 10 am - 5pm.  Park legally around the park off Pleasant Valley Way/Lakeside.  The hours of the free show are 10 AM-5 PM, rain or shine. Fifth Annual Family Bike Ride or Hike Thru The Hilltop
Saturday, June 7, Noon
Enjoy an easy walk or bike ride at your own pace with your young children through the Hilltop Reservation on Saturday, June 7 at noon. (Rain date, June 8) The route is approximately 1.5 miles long and never bothered by annoying vehicles! Bikes with training wheels are welcome. Please arrive by 11:45 a.m.
Park in the lot behind the sports field on Mountain Avenue in North Caldwell (Courter Road entrance to the Hilltop Reservation). The marked route starts directly from the parking lot. Visit www.HilltopConservancy.org  for directions.

Don’t bring money. The ride, beautiful scenery and memories are free. Do bring helmets, a camera and perhaps some drinks or snacks for your children. You may want to allow additional time to explore the many new trails in this new Essex County Park.

“Taylor Made V” Art Exhibit in May

“Taylor Made V” is the theme of an art exhibition in May by two Verona artists. Award-winning artist and teacher, Ann Taylor, is joined by husband Allen in a two-person exhibit of watercolor and pastel paintings at the Library of the Chathams, Chatham, NJ.

Ann Taylor teaches popular watercolor painting classes with the Livingston Arts Association and the Bloomfield Art League. She has won over 60 awards including the Lettie Steinhart Award for Best Watercolor, West Essex Art Assn, at Caldwell College, January 2007 and Best in Show at the Millburn-Shorthills Art Club (M-SHAC) Show, Fall 2006. A past-president of the Essex Water Color Club, Ann Taylor is an exhibiting member and vice-president of the New Jersey Watercolor Society.

Among recent honors for Allen Taylor are an Award of Excellence at the M-SHAC Fall 2007 Exhibit, the John A. Sullivan III Award at the Annual West Essex Art Association’s Caldwell College show in 2006 and a First Place Award for Professional Watercolors at the Annual Essex County Senior Citizens Art Contest. Allen is an exhibiting member of the Essex Watercolor Club, New Jersey’s oldest watercolor association. Both Ann and Allen are among the contributing artists for the Verona Park Conservancy note cards.

The joint show runs from May 5th throughout the month, at the Lower Level Gallery of the Library of the Chathams, 214 Main Street, Chatham, NJ. The exhibit of 60+ paintings is open to the public during regular library hours: Monday through Thursday, 9:30am to 9pm; Friday, 9:30am to 6pm; Saturday, 9:30am to 5pm; Sunday 2 to 5pm.

Cedar Grove Historical Society
The Cedar Grove Historical Society is holding its annual membership drive. Memberships are $15/person and $20/family Meetings are the fourth Wednesday. 7:30pm at the Cedar Grove Public Library. Forms are available at the library of at the Morgan Farm and Museum located at 903 Pompton Avenue. The museum is open Wednesday Mornings.

The first meeting of 2008 will be about the business of early Cedar Grove. Centennial souvenirs of hats, T-shirts, golf shirts, tote bags, and Images of Cedar Grove will also be available. Prices range from $15 to $30.
